Since the game was started over a year ago, abilities could only be used by pressing the hotkey associated with them. Unlike most RTS games, there were no buttons for orders or abilities that you could click on with the mouse.
Another thing abilities didn’t have were tooltips. You knew the name of an ability if it had to be aimed because the name would appear next to the mouse, or if you looked up the abilities in the shops or library.
Version v1.17b23 added buttons and tooltips to abilities. Now the pictures drawn at the bottom of the screen can be moused over for a description of what the ability does, and then clicked on. This makes the game more mouse friendly and more like a normal RTS.
The only problem with this is that so far clicking the ability button will also trigger an aimed ability to be cast at the location of the mouse when it clicked the button. The aimed ability will immediately activate when you left click on the button, and consider that same left click as the aimed target of the ability. So you’d better enjoy shooting lasers towards the bottom of the screen. Alternatively you can keep the mouse pressed and only release it when you’ve aimed the ability. This should be fixed at a later point though.
Part of the reason for this bug is that I made all the abilities trigger on the left mouse button being released, so that the user could potentially left click, but then realise they didn’t want to use the ability, and right click before letting go of the left mouse button to cancel. There are too many abilities to waste time changing all of them on, and if I did it would get rid of the advantage I just mentioned. So another fix has to be found. This shows how important planning in game design is.
